Mells Village Hall
Mells, Somerset, BA11 3QA
Mells Memorial Hall was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1924 as a war memorial for this beautiful estate village near Frome. The hall's Lutyens provenance gives it an architectural distinction rare among village halls, with its classical proportions, stone construction, and elegant simplicity.
The main room seats 55 beneath a high ceiling with clerestory windows that fill the space with soft light. The Lutyens-designed fireplace is the hall's centrepiece. A separate committee room accommodates 15. The village has enjoyed a cultural renaissance in recent years, with the Talbot Inn (a coaching inn on the village street) and the nearby Hauser & Wirth gallery in Bruton attracting visitors.
Mells itself is a quiet estate village of stone cottages and farm buildings, with a remarkable church containing works by Burne-Jones and Eric Gill. The village walled garden, open to the public, is a short walk from the hall.
Frome is 3 miles south, and Bath is 12 miles northwest. Frome station provides direct services to Bristol, Bath, and Weymouth. Parking is available on New Street.
